For years, fans of the beloved American sitcom The Office have clamored for a reunion movie, hoping to catch up with the quirky employees of Dunder Mifflin Scranton. While the desire for a film remains strong, the future of the franchise is heading in a different direction, expanding its universe rather than revisiting the original storyline.
The Next Chapter: A New Series, Not a Movie
Instead of a movie, a new mockumentary series set within the same universe as The Office is in development for Peacock.[1][2] Greg Daniels, who adapted the show for American audiences, is leading this new project.[1][3] He has clarified that this will not be a reboot, expressing that the original story concluded beautifully and he would not want to redo it with a different cast.[4]
The new series, reportedly titled The Paper, will follow the documentary crew that immortalized the Dunder Mifflin Scranton branch as they seek a new subject.[1][5][6] Their focus lands on a historic Midwestern newspaper whose publisher is attempting to revive it with volunteer reporters.[1][3] The show will introduce a fresh ensemble cast led by Domhnall Gleeson (About Time) and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus).[1] This approach allows the creators to explore a new workplace with fresh comedic potential while maintaining the familiar mockumentary style.[2]
The “Other” Office Movie: David Brent’s Story
While a movie featuring the American cast has not materialized, a film connected to the original UK version of The Office already exists. In 2016, Ricky Gervais, co-creator of the original series, wrote, directed, and starred in David Brent: Life on the Road.[7][8]
The film picks up 15 years after the conclusion of the British series, following the awkward and fame-seeking David Brent as he cashes in his pensions to self-finance a UK music tour in a last-ditch effort to become a rock star.[7][9] Shot in the same mockumentary style, the movie explores the tragic and cringe-worthy journey of Brent, who is now a traveling salesman for a cleaning products company.[7][8] This film stands as a separate entity, focusing solely on Gervais’s iconic character from the UK show.
Despite persistent fan hopes and even an April Fool’s joke in 2020 that teased a movie centered on Michael Scott, there are currently no official plans to reunite the Dunder Mifflin team for a feature film.[10] The franchise’s future lies with “The Paper,” a new chapter that promises to expand the world of The Office for a new generation.[5]
